The Story of the Wheat Swamp Ruritan Club

Fifty years ago some concerned businessmen and farmers of the Wheat Swamp community saw the need to band together to form a rural civic club designed to improve conditions and plan for the future of this section of Lenoir County. After several meetings, the Wheat Swamp Ruritan Club was formed in October 1956, under the sponsorship of the Rural Urban Committee of the Kinston Rotary Club, supported by E. Under the leadership of their first president, Merle Edwards,a nucleus of leadership was formed to insure community growth. The continous service to the community has been recognized on national, district and community levels.

The objectives of this club are centered around the church, the community/home, and the schools with "Service" to our community needs as a high priority.
